Cape Breton Fiddler's Run - September 9, 2012


Come to Harbourside Commercial Park to cheer on the runners! The Cape Breton Fiddlers Run, presented by the Sydney Credit Union will take place on Sunday, September 9, 2012. With a 5km, 10km, half marathon, team-relay, Boston qualifying marathon and numerous events for youth and families. One leg of the race will pass through Harbourside Commercial Park. 55+ Games Opening- August 29, 2012

On Wednesday the opening of the 55+ Games took place at Harbourside Commercial Park. The athletes were given a Cape Breton welcome with music performed by the Sons of Membertou, the RCMP Pipe and Drum band, the Louisbourg Fife and Drums band and members from the Cape Breton Fiddler's Association. Over 1,500 athletes from across Canada are taking part in the games. There will be a number of different sports taking place at venues throughout the Island and spectators are welcome. On Thursday August 30 and Friday August 31 boccie (a game similar to lawn bowling) will take place at the Steelmen's Memorial Field at Harbourside Commercial Park from 9:30 to 3pm. Boccie

On Thursday August 30 and Friday August 31 boccie (a game similar to lawn bowling) will take place at the Steelmen's Memorial Field at Harbourside Commercial Park from 9:30 to 3pm.

Boccie is a ball game where teams try to throw balls closest to the jack - a smaller ball that is thrown at the beginning of the game. It was a game developed in Ancient Rome and has become a popular sport in Italy and other European countries.

Ferry Street Bridge Opening- August 11, 2012

On Saturday the Ferry Street Bridge was opened to the public in ceremony that included a child's boat race, a smudging ceremony and talks from various government representatives. With the opening of Ferry Street bridge, traffic flow will be reduced on the major arteries. Motorists and pedestrians will enjoy the beautifully landscaped area that will soon house sports fields, playgrounds and walking paths.

Tower Gets a Face-lift - August 2, 2012

On Thursday the landmark tower at Harbourside Commercial Park was pressure washed in preparation for painting. In 2005 the tower was painted and a logo added to the top. After seven years the tower started to show signs of corrosion. The painting will take place within a week, weather allowing.

Protocase Celebrates 10 years in Business - July 13, 2012

On Friday July 13 Protocase celebrated 10 years in business. Steve Lilley, the president and co-founder of Protocase, a manufacturer of custom enclosures, spoke to a crowd gathered outside Protocase about the success the company has had over the past ten years and plans for its' future growth.

Drive One 4UR Community June 23, 2012

On Saturday June 23 Plaza Ford and Ford of Canada are pleased to partner with the Sydney Girl guides in their quest to travel Europe. From 9 am to 5 pm the Girl Guides will receive $20 donation for each test drive. All test drives will be held at Harbourside Commercial Park. For details call 567-1616


Protocase Receives Award

Eleven companies from across Nova Scotia were recognized in their communities for excellence in exporting, will be honored at the Export Achievement Awards luncheon, presented by Nova Scotia Business Inc., the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Trade Team Nova Scotia. One of the companies was Protocase, a company located at Harbourside Commercial Park. Protocase started in 2001, it now has 60 employees and over 4000 customers across North America and around the world. Protocase manufactures electronic enclosures and metal components for innovators in the electronics industry. Customers work for organizations that range from startups to the best known names in technology, including Google, Apple, Microsoft, Boeing, MIT, Stanford University, and many more.

Canada 55+ Games - August 29-Sept. 1 2012


Harbourside will host the Opening Ceremonies of the Canada 55+ Games. The opening of the games is on August 29 at 10 am. The public is encouraged to attend and cheer on the athletes. The ceremonies will be at Harbourside's sports field - the Steelmen's Memorial Filed. The games will run from August 29 to September 1 and feature more then 1,500 participants from across Canada. There will be 23 sports at various venues throughout the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. The website provides a complete listing of all activities and events - www.canada55plusgames.com

Heritage Trail Grand Opening

The Heritage Trail Grand Opening will occur Friday October 14 at 11am at Harbourside Elementary School. The trail is 1.5 km's long. Panels along the walking and cycling trail will tell the history of the Whitney Pier neighbourhood and of the former Sydney Steel plant.

Cape Breton Classic Road Race

The third annual Cape Breton Classic Road Race took place Saturday August 27 and Sunday August 28. Some of Nova Scotia's fastest cyclists competed in the race along with cyclists from other provinces. The race was hosted by the Framework Racing Team

This year part of the race was held in Sydney at Harbourside Commercial Park. The first stage took place near Sydport Industrial Park at 1pm. This part of the race was a 9km time trial. The second stage started at Harbourside at 4pm. On Sunday the final stage was held and involved 115km of road racing over hills surrounding Barachois Mountain near Georges River.

It was a beautiful day at Harbourside for the racers. Many of the racers were pleased with the facilities at the park. The newly paved road surfaces provided a smooth ride while the open space allowed spectators and bikers to easily see the racers.
